I had not seen the stage version of Sweeney Todd prior to the movie nor do I know much about the history behind the story. However for someone like me, who doesn't get to see these things in the theater very often, a movie is a nice alternative. That is why I went to see it. And as others have said, Johnny's role in it was just a bonus. But truth be told, I was more curious about Alan Rickman's role in the movie and I was very interested in hearing him sing.

See? Even you had more than one reason to go see it. I just hate when whole fanmobs of Johnny Depp go to watch the movie, and hardly take in anything other than how awesomely hot Johnny Depp is. I'm not saying he's not, I'm a fangirl too. But when you go to watch his movies ONLY because he's in it and walk away knowing not much more than Johnny Depp was in it and how cute he looked in his costume. Not cool.

There is this girl on my other forum who is a huge fan of Michael Cerveris, who played the lead in Sweeney on Broadway. She hated the thought of Johnny Depp playing Sweeney. She thought Michael should have been asked to play the part. And she said she would not go to see it because of that.

That also ruins a fandom, people that are TOO loyal to the originals. And Michael Cerveris isn't the only person to ever play Sweeney on stage either. There were lots of people that played him. Johnny Depp just joined the ranks. She probably sees him as nothing but a little teen girl's heartthrob. I never look at him that way. He's had a whole pile of...well, he's had his share of problems and he's not exactly as normal as everyone thinks he is. Not to mention, for never singing before, Johnny had an AMAZING singing voice. And he's a great actor. Lots of people involved with the movie said they wouldn't do it if Johnny didn't play Sweeney. I wonder, has she seen anything he's been in other than Pirates of the Caribbean? She should go watch a movie called Secret Window before she does any judging. Not to mention Edward Sissorhands.

I do believe she likes Johnny as an actor but she just couldn't see him in that role. And I know she is aware that other actors (other than Michael ) have played Sweeney . LOL I just think he's her favorite. But I also think that if she never watches it because of all that, she's missing out.

Yeah I totally get the whole annoying-ness of people who go to see movies purely for the fact an actor they think is hott is in it. I still believe though, that it's okay for people who like a certain actor to see a movie that may have been a book/stage show originally. As I said before, people are introduced to things differently. So, I think it's good that movies like Phantom of the Opera (2004) and Sweeney Todd were made in order to widen the audience of these stories.

I'm glad they didn't do that with Rent, though. That would have made it terrible because the cast that they had for it was perfect!

I actually went to go see ST because it was a horror musical. The concept was entirely amusing, and seemed to be one horror movie that I'd not get nightmares from because it was a musical. Plus, I love Tim, Helena, and Alan. Depp was an attraction, though not too much because I don't like his looks outside of Jack Sparrow. xD

I didn't think it was scary at all. The blood was also very fake looking. It looked really pasty and orange. I'm glad they didn't do that with Rent, though. Yeah, and glad the Broadway's Mimi wasn't. (She's not fit for the part anymore. She's 40 and sounds like it while Mimi is 19 and should sound remotely like it).

Sweeney Todd the movie was much darker than the musical, but not what you'd call scary. Although (((SPOILER!!!!)) Mrs. Lovett's death at the end would have been enough to give me nightmares if I hadn't known it was coming. I cried when Sweeney died. Seriously. I'm a big fan of Tim's work, and Helena's a great actress, Johnny is amazing (and made a pretty damn hot Sweeney Todd, if you'll forgive me for saying so), and Alan was the perfect choice for the Judge. The girl that played Lucy also did pretty good, because the Beggar Woman's songs are NOT easy. It's surprisingly hard to sing out of tune purposely, you know.

I thought they sounded good, though. I liked the whole "City on fire" stuff. I thought it was sad that (spoilers) Sweeney killed her and she turned out to be his wife.

I know. But it's the whole point of the musical. I think the moral is 'life isn't fair'. But I knew it was coming, so it kind of ruined the surprise. What I didn't know ((SPOILER)) was that Sweeney throws Lovett into the oven. The person that introduced me to it didn't tell me how she died, just that she did die.

Probably something similar. It'd be harder to get done. They probably throw her off stage or into a BIG oven and shine a really bright reddish orange light.
