OK, I've been noticing lately some really nice text on graphics. And I'm beginning to feel like I suck at text. LOL
So that brings me to this thread. How do you decide where to place text? What color(s) to use? Whether to leave the color flat or add some sort of bevel? Use a stroke or not?
Also, what if the text you want to add (size and coloring) is hard to read where you want to place it, what do you do to make the text stand out more?

I usually put my text on either overlay, soft light, or grain merge, depending on how busy my background is, and if it's hard to see, I make more than one layer. If I have two I try grain merge on the first layer and overlay/soft light on the second layer to see how it works. If it doesn't work, I just put them both on the same thing and see how that works. If it still doesn't work, I start moving it to see where it would look better.

Also, what if the text you want to add (size and coloring) is hard to read where you want to place it, what do you do to make the text stand out more? xD Usually, I have a general idea of where I want to place text after the render/stock is in place. There's usually a blank area after I position my focal. If there isn't a good place, I leave text off. I use either colors that stand out, but are a shade that matches a little-occurring color in the final image, or that looks good when put on a blending option. Sometimes, on darker images, I just use white set on soft light, duplicate, and set to 50% opacity. I never, ever use a bevel. For the most part, bevels look sloppy and unprofessional. There are some cases where I will use embossing set on a very soft, very shallow effect, but for the most part, I stay away from any 3D-ing of my text. When the text is hard to read, I usually either stroke or outer glow the layer, sometimes combined with blending effects & drop shadow.

^^ what anne said in a nutshell lol.
usually when i place the focal i look for a place on my sig where i can fit in the text i want to put in, then have it so it still compliments the flow.
im a big fan of having the heading+subheading kind of text on my larger sigs. i generally use a cursive font for the 'heading' and then a neat normalish font as a 'subheading' type thing
