Oh and how would you go about making a skin with the buttons similar to the skin here? Jordie I don't know what technique VO used on this skin, so I'll let her answer that question. For me, I always make the banner first - I generally have a color scheme in mind, and try to stick with it, but I don't necessarily have a specific color. I let the banner go in whatever direction it goes in, then design the skin around it, using colors from the final banner. My on/off icons are always either part of the banner, theme of the skin, or a simple box with a random pattern. I try to stay away from overly bright colors - like neons.

You know, when I started making the section that frames the boards, I didn't really know what I was doing. I just knew that I didn't want just plain rounded edges but at the same time I didn't want squared off edges either so I made multiple layers and made certain parts round and other parts squared off. Pretty much every time I make a template and then go to make the menu buttons I create the design of the buttons, create the actual buttons and test them on a test board. More often than not I have to go back and make some adjustments to the buttons for whatever reason ... they didn't line up like I thought they would, they were too big, etc. So then I go back and edit them until they display the way I wanted them to. For this forum, I used a code to remove the welcome table ... so that meant the entire area where a banner would be and the navigation would be was removed. So then I used a different code to place the navigation where I wanted them. In this case, I wanted them at the top of the design that wraps the boards. Below is an example of one of the menu buttons. I have put a black border around the graphic so you can see there is a lot of excess white space below the button. The buttons were not originally like that. I didn't have all that extra space below them and I had made them transparent. However, for some reason, when I would view the forum in Firefox it looked perfectly fine. But when I would view it in Internet Explorer, there was a table color (not white) behind the buttons so I had to make the buttons match the height of the table cell and fill it with whatever was behind the buttons in order to hide that other color. Now, I am not entirely sure why that happened though. But it wasn't really a problem to alter the buttons to cover that imperfection. I'm not entirely sure any of this answers your questions but it's difficult to explain to someone how you make a template.
